The first meeting of the Monitoring Mechanism for the National Strategy for Migration 2024-2030 organized

Tirana, 30 September 2024 - IOM Albania is proud to have supported the Government of Albania in drafting the new Strategy for Migration, an important document that addresses both the challenges and opportunities that migration presents for the country. At the first meeting of the Monitoring Mechanism for the National Strategy for Migration 2024-2030 and the Action Plan 2024-2026, IOM Albania's Head of Office, Alma Jani, emphasized IOM’s dedication to this crucial effort: “This strategy stands as evidence of our commitment to addressing both the challenges and opportunities that migration presents.”

The meeting of the Technical Committee on Migration chaired by the Deputy Minister of Interior, Andi Mahila, was an important step in moving the strategy from paper to action. This discussion was the first of many, as the mechanism outlined key priorities, confirmed contact points for institutions responsible for implementation and presented the reporting and monitoring tool of the strategy, an instrument designed to guide policy actions and measure progress.

Developed with the IOM Development Fund support, a central feature of the strategy is its alignment with international frameworks such as the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration and embeds a strong focus on gender equality and rights-based approaches, ensuring the protection of vulnerable groups. Moreover, the strategy introduces clear indicators to track progress and guarantee that actions are in line with international standards and the rights of migrants.

The launch of this strategy is a significant milestone for Albania and a key step towards fostering safe and well-managed migration, ultimately contributing to national development while upholding the rights and dignity of all migrants.

Earlier, as part of the drafting process of the Migration Strategy, IOM supported the Ministry of Interior in the development of workshops to strengthen the knowledge and capacities of government officials and stakeholders on the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), sustainable development, the assessment and validation of the current situation and the main priorities in the field of migration, and other relevant frameworks.
