National Strategy on Migration in Albania – IOM hosted an informative workshop on the Global Compact for Migration
Tirana, 9-10 May 2023 – In the framework of IOM support to the Government of Albania for the drafting and implementation of the new National Strategy for Migration and the Action Plan in Albania, IOM hosted a two-day workshop on 9 and 10 May 2023 to further strengthen the knowledge and capacities of both government officials and stakeholders between Global Compact for Migration (GCM), sustainable development, and other relevant frameworks. It also highlighted the importance of a 360-degree approach to migration and the importance of a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.
With the first day dedicated to government representatives, including those overseeing Albania’s new Strategy on Migration and Action Plan, and the second day dedicated to stakeholders from civil society, academia, development partners, donors, and other United Nations Agencies in Albania, the event was an opportunity to impress on the set of cross-cutting and interdependent guiding principles enshrined in the compact: people-centred, international cooperation, national sovereignty, rule of law and due process, sustainable development, human rights, gender-responsive, child-sensitive, whole-of-government approach, and whole-of-society approach. Participation in this workshop aimed to enable all actors involved to contribute to developing and implementing the National Strategy for Migration and Action Plan, fully aligned with the Global Compact for Migration.
This workshop was closely coordinated with the Ministry of Interior (MoI), as the primary Government institution responsible for migration governance; the Technical Secretariat on Migration (TSM) developing, monitoring, and reporting on the implementation of the new strategy; as well as with the IOM Regional Office for South-Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It took place within the two-year project “Supporting the development and implementation of a new National Strategy on Migration and Action Plan in Albania” funded by IOM Development Fund.
