Prevention of Trafficking in Women through Awareness Raising and Institutional Capacity Building (Completed: June 2004)
This project consisted of law enforcement capacity building, an information campaign through media and public activities, rehabilitation and arrangements in police reception facilities, capacity building in educational personnel and prevention through the education system. It commenced with specific training in counter trafficking measures so that results could quickly be seen in the number of referrals and positive actions in detecting and preventing trafficking cases. IOM worked in partnership with local NGOs and the Police Academy to organize additional training courses. A total of 606 Police Officers have received training from October 2001 to October 2002.
After signing the Memorandum of Understanding between IOM and the Albanian Government, for the first time Albania included the subject of trafficking of human beings in the school curricula. This project was completed in June 2004.
